Get Inspired With These Makeup Application Tips From Top Makeup Artists

No woman is born with innate knowledge of using makeup. One can master it through years of constant experience and practice. In the pro cheer community, rookies are often surprised to see other members wearing heavier and more complicated cosmetics.

As a result, they end up making a lot of makeup application mistakes out of pressure. If this is your first year as a pro cheerleader or you’re just auditioning for a squad, these are the tips from well-known makeup artists and bloggers you should follow.

1. Add vitamin C serum

Concealers, blushes, foundations, and bronzers cannot disguise fatigued, rough, and dry skin. Add vitamin C serum to your moisturizer to help fade dark spots and stimulate collagen production. Makeup artist Gita Bass and beauty guru Tim Quinn both agree that this will lighten and plump up your skin without requiring you to use too much cosmetics.

2. Apply blush before foundation

James Vincent, celebrity makeup artist and director of artistry for Ardency Inn, says, "Add your favorite blush to the cheeks before you apply foundation for a glow that looks like it's coming from beneath the skin. A bright, warm pink at the apple is perfect for any complexion."

3. Moisturizer before applying foundation

Put on moisturizer first on events that don’t require putting on blushes. Makeup on moist skin will appear brighter. For added skin benefits while wearing cosmetics, mix your moisturizer with serum as mentioned in #1.

4. Use tissues to remove excess foundation

Too much foundation will cause your facial skin tone to look different from your neck and body. And a lot of women make the mistake of rubbing or wiping the excess foundation off which makes things worse.

Only put a little more foundation on areas that need more coverage such as around your nose and eyes, not your entire face. Then as Laura Mercier and Azra Red advises, blend the foundation by dabbing with a beauty blender, not through rubbing using your fingers. Although the latter also works, nothing beats the final product of using the right makeup tools.

5. Use eye drops

If you notice your eyes feel itchy and look red after applying makeup, it means that your cosmetics contain allergens that don’t agree with your body. You should find other makeup alternatives without ingredients that irritate your eyes and the skin around them.

However, if you’re in an event and cannot or don’t have spare non-allergenic makeup, Angelica Di Guglielmo suggests using eye drops to constrict your eyes’ blood vessels and minimize redness. It’s also important to know that there are eye drops designed for the use of contact lenses or without. Don’t mix their purposes as they can cause undesirable effects.

6. Powder finish

For the final tip: Sir John, the superstar makeup artist close to Beyoncé and Joan Smalls, advises finishing all the cream applications with setting powder. That includes base, foundation, blush, highlighters, and powder shadows after drawing your eyebrow. This will make your skin appear velvety or the so-called “Teflon face”. Instead of your skin appearing ridiculously under the sun or on camera due to makeup, it appears natural.

There are more tips to make yourself prettier through the use of cosmetics. All you need to do is research, study, and test what you’ve learned from collective knowledge and experience. As Pat McGrath, the famous British makeup artist said, “Creativity is your best makeup skill, don’t be afraid to experiment.”
