What You Should Do After Every Workout
When it comes to working out, we often focus on what comes before and during the workout, and less on what comes after. Did you know that the things you do right after your sweat session impact your results? It doesn't matter if you're training your body for the auditions or simply completing your weekly exercise routine as a current or former cheerleader. Make sure you heed these 6 post-workout tips.
Stretch your body.
I'm quite surprised that a lot of people don't bother to stretch after a workout. That can explain why one experiences fatigue and has a limited range of motion especially if weight lifting is being done. Areas of your body that need stretching include your neck, chest and biceps. triceps, hamstrings, quads, back, and hips and glutes.
Hydrate!
Of course. You probably already know that I'm going to include this tip. Replenishing the fluids you lost through your workout is extremely important. Going through the rest of your day dehydrated causes tiredness, sleepiness, headaches, and moodiness.
Eat a healthy and filling post-workout snack.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend replenishing all those burned carbohydrates by eating something that's very high in carbs. Doing that will defeat the purpose of your workout especially if your goal is to lose some weight and improve muscle mass. Great post-workout foods are those that are low in carbs and high in healthy fat. These foods also fill you up and replenish your energy. Examples include whey protein, hard boiled eggs, avocados, and nuts.
Don't forget to foam roll.
Foam rolling is a practice of self-massaging the hardened bands of tissue in your body. Rolling through stiff areas such as your thighs, legs, and glutes, releases pressure and actually helps you recover faster! Spend at least 10 minutes to foam roll. Give each sore spot 30 seconds. Just remember to avoid your lower back to prevent spasm.
Record your progress.
Logging your workout in a simple notebook, app, or even an excel spreadsheet allows you to challenge yourself and stay motivated. Looking back at what you've done during the week can make you feel proud. You'll also be able to identify workouts where you need to increase your reps or weights to prevent a plateau.
Take a cool shower.
A cool shower will decrease the inflammation of your muscles and joints. Not to mention, it refreshes you physically, mentally, and emotionally. There's no need for you to have an ice bath. Simply lowering the temperature of your shower does the trick.
Make the most of your workout by following these post-workout tips. As you can see, the little things you do to take your fitness to the next level matters a lot. Thank you for reading today's post!!!
