Audition Prep: How to Stop Overthinking and Get Things Done
Overthinking is normal human behavior. But that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. Getting stuck in your own thoughts can breed negativity such as anxiety and paranoia to the point that it kills your productivity. Instead of going to sleep early for a morning workout session, you’ll overthink and stay up past midnight.
On other occasions, overthinking can cause you to ignore healthy meal prep, makeup application practice, dance practices, and other audition preparation activities. As a result, you won’t be fully prepared for an audition. It’s a vicious cycle. But the good news is, you can prevent it from happening starting today. Learn how below.
1. Schedule time for reflection
Turn overthinking into a reflection session by doing it at the right place and time. A good example would be during your showers since it’s the time of the day when your mind is mostly empty and your creativity is at its peak.
2. Keep your focus on problem-solving
When you’re reflecting on mistakes and problems, you must remember to look for solutions first and not the negativity itself. Don’t have the money to audition for your dream team? Think of getting a job or doing extra work.
For example, you could do away with unnecessary activities from your daily schedule to make time for a side hustle to save up for audition prep. Following this kind of thought process helps you arrive at a solid solution to your problems.
If you’re experiencing a major setback, don’t dwell on the past. Instead, learn to accept what happened and find a way to make things better.
3. Notice when you’re stuck in your head
Overthinking becomes highly destructive when you ignore its signs. More often than not, overthinking turns into a habit that’s difficult to stop. The best way to help yourself notice you’re in a negative thought loop is talking to someone you trust about your problems. Then ask them, “Am I overthinking?” If they say yes, learn to accept their judgment and be open to advice.
4. Look for a distraction
Find something else to do. Better yet, tend to your audition preparation activities immediately. Start by doing one simple activity for five minutes such as chopping vegetables for your healthy lunch tomorrow. You’ll eventually get something done as productivity will come naturally after. Don’t let your guard down even for a moment. Remember that an idle mind is the devil’s playground.
5. Accept your best
The truth is that things won’t always go your way. You can’t expect to be the kind of dancer your dream team is looking for after just a month of preparation. But you shouldn’t let it stop you from doing your best.
Instead of moping around and feeling the pressure for not being enough, adopt an all-or-nothing mindset. When you fail, don’t beat yourself up. Think about what went wrong, what you could do better the next time, and try again when the next opportunity for an audition presents itself.
In summary, here’s how you can stop and prevent overthinking: Know the signs that you’re in a negative thought loop and find a distraction to divert your attention. Once your mind is disciplined to think productively, schedule a part of the day for reflection and problem-solving.
If you’re getting anxious at the thought of failure, promise yourself that whatever happens during the auditions, you’ll learn from your setbacks, try again, and do better the next time.
