Good Posture in 30 Days: A Guide for Aspiring Pro Cheerleaders

Good posture is a must-have among aspiring cheerleaders for the auditions. Judges will observe you carefully as you stand, walk, and sit during the entire audition process. Think of it as you’re also auditioning for a beauty pageant.

The only difference is, it’s more athletic than representing where you come from. But good posture is hard to develop. Especially if you already have bad habits such as slouching while sitting, looking down on your phone while you use it, and walking all droopy.

However, it’s not too late to have a good posture overall. You can start at home by following these tips.

1. Sit properly

Practice proper sitting posture sitting by sitting by the end of your chair. Make sure that the chair won’t slide away or tip over when you sit. Roll your shoulders and neck forward into a full slouching position.

Pull your head back and shoulders back up into a tall sitting position. Hold this position for a few seconds. It might feel forced and comfortable but please bear with it. Slowly release this position. You’re sitting with a good posture now.

Remember the feeling of this position and follow this ritual as you sit on any chair for the next 30 days. It is highly recommended that you invest in ergonomic office chairs especially if you work or study at home. Ordinary chairs are major bad sitting posture influencers.

2. Stand up, walk, and jog straight

To walk straight, start by standing against a wall as if you’re measuring your height. Hold your head straight and tuck your chin in. Slightly pull your shoulders backward while slightly bringing your bust upward.

Don’t let your butt or hips stick outward. Keep your knees straight. Straighten up your neck as if your head reaches towards the sky. Breathe in slowly and out. Release the tension in your muscles into a relaxed state while maintaining a straight standing posture.

Then walk forward slowly and until you feel comfortable keeping a straight posture. Increase your pace and keep on walking around while memorizing the feeling. Be mindful of keeping your posture at all times while walking until it becomes a natural part of you.

When running outside, follow the entire procedure of walking straight until you increase your pace into running. Remember to keep your upper body and neck straight upward as you run.

3. Beware of the “texting neck” syndrome

As funny and alarming as it sounds, more and more of us nowadays are getting affected by this problem. However, there’s one simple trick to avoid it - always hold your phone upward while using it. While sitting, rest your elbows on your chest or hold your phone with one hand and use the other to support it. You might look different but it’s for the right reasons.

Better yet, reduce the need of opening your phone. The best way to do this is to disable all notifications from non-essential apps like social media and YouTube or setting a usage timer for all of them. This way, you won’t spend a lot of your time looking down.

4. Don’t be a low-rider

We highly suggest that you walk or bike to places you need to go to stay active and improve posture, but since there are other destinations that require you to drive a car, we instruct you not to recline too much while driving.

Pull your seat close to the steering wheel and maintain a 30 to 45-degree seat recline. Don’t lock your legs while driving and keep your knees bent slightly all the time. Your knees should be at hip level or a little bit above. It’s also good to invest in ergonomic foams to support your neck and back as you drive.

Good posture starts with mindfulness and everyday tasks make us forget how to properly maintain it. That is why it is important to always check yourself in the mirror to see if you’re sitting, standing, or walking straight. Ask the person you’re with if your posture is good. Quickly correct your posture if they say otherwise. Follow all these tips for 30 days for noticeable effects.
