How To Clear Mental Clutter So You Can Focus On Your Audition Practice

Have you ever experienced waiting backstage before a big presentation? At first, you're super calm and confident. Minutes after, your mind started racing and you felt butterflies in your stomach. The next thing you knew, you entertained all kinds of overwhelming negative thoughts. Your mind wandered and you lost focus.

When it comes to preparing for the fast-approaching pro cheer auditions, mental clutter is one of your biggest enemies. It prevents you from focusing on the right things. It steals your personal power. Mental clutter can come in different forms: Worries, anxieties, fears, regrets, negative self-talk, unfinished tasks in other areas of your life, daily struggles, commitment, and more.

In this blog post, I'm going to teach you 4 ways on how to spring clean your overworked brain. That way, you'll be able to focus whenever you need to focus on your audition prep. Remember: Making room for mental clarity contributes to success. Keep reading.

How to Clear Mental Clutter

Take a few moments to meditate.

I know what you're thinking: "I have a lot on my plate already. Meditation is a waste of time!" Well, you don't even need 15 minutes to meditate. Relax your body right now, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on those breaths for 5 minutes. Meditation works by bringing down stress that's responsible for mental confusion.

Use time blocking.

Time blocking is a technique where you set a timer for a specific task and dedicate all of your energies for completing that task. What I like about time blocking for pro cheer prep is that it provides you with the opportunity to work on a goal without distractions. It removes the mental burden of having to entertain thoughts that are irrelevant to audition success.

Find privacy.

It would be extremely hard to concentrate on dancing or practicing the interviews portion when your parents are watching or people are randomly passing by. It's best to carve out a special space where you can practice in peace and nobody's there to make comments or random requests.

Replace critical thoughts with accurate statements.

Not every thought that enters your mind is accurate. The problem is that you see things as purely black and white. Whenever you catch yourself thinking, "I'm never motivated," replace it with a more realistic phrase such as, "Sometimes I feel so tired from work or school that it affects my mood for practice." Making accurate statements will allow you to assess the situation and seek ways to solve the root problem in a realistic manner.

Final Thoughts

These are the simple ways you can keep your mind clutter-free and give more space for what's important. Following these tips may take some adjustment but they work. Always remember that no two things can occupy your mind at once - when you practice for the auditions, do just that.
