How to Set Your Pro Cheer Audition Goals and Make Them Happen
Goal setting -- it’s the single most important thing you should be doing to get whatever you want in life. It keeps you motivated, gives you a reason to do your best each day, and fuels your personal development.
As someone who thinks of auditioning for a pro or semi-pro dance team this year, you need to set goals the right way. In this article, I’m going to reveal proven strategies of goal setting and actually making it happen. Dig in.
Focus on the things that you want.
We’re familiar with this scenario: People set goals based on what they don’t want, not on what they want. I don’t want to gain weight. I don’t want to humiliate myself in front of the judges. I don’t want to ruin my solo routine.
The problem with focusing on the negatives is that it induces fear. You don’t want to be fearful. You want to be happy, confident, and at peace with yourself while training for the auditions.
Go BIG but be REALISTIC.
You have a big plan for yourself. You want to make your dream team! Is it the NFL Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders? The NBA Brooklynettes? Whatever team you want to be part of, you don’t want your big plan to remain unfulfilled.
That said, make sure you have a grip on reality. Where are you now in your pro cheer audition prep? Are you able to perfect all audition aspects (your fitness, dancing, poise, etc.) before your team’s audition date?
Most importantly, you should be able to break down the steps needed to achieve the goal -- for example, practice Hip Hop 15 minutes per day or lift weights for 20 minutes, thrice a week.
Hold yourself accountable.
Personal accountability means being responsible for your actions because if you don’t, the chances of meeting your goals diminish. One way to hold yourself accountable is to fully know why you want to become a professional cheerleader. Doing your best becomes natural if you have a motivation behind a goal.
Another means to practice personal accountability is to find a buddy. If you know of a friend or acquaintance who plans to audition soon or in the future, team up! You can share tips and keep one another motivated!
Find a mentor.
You want to learn and master the right things. That means you need an expert who can tell you what your next steps should be. Your mentor can take the form of a book, online course, or series of videos. It can be someone whom you can meet face to face -- like a fitness guru or former pro cheerleader.
Write it on your calendar.
The simple act of writing down something is effective in that it brings clarity into your practice. On a calendar, assign a pro cheer audition aspect to focus on. Make sure that you can easily see or access the calendar. That way, you have no excuse of forgetting what you wrote.
