How to Strengthen Weak Hair (Everything You Need to Know)

Weak hair can be a sign of poor nutrition and bad hair care habits among women. As an aspiring or pro cheerleader, it becomes even more alarming to see an auditionee or an arena dancer with frizzy and tangled hair. It’s an absolute disaster to both the viewer and performer.

Since we’ve talked about damaged hair and how to repair it, we’re going to dive into what causes weak hair and a few of its signs. As usual, you’ll also find ways on how to strengthen it again and tips to take to avoid it from being weak.

What Causes Weak Hair?

1. Over-styling

Heating, bleaching, and dyeing damages the hair’s cuticle which is the outer protective layer of your hair strands. Other hairstyles like teasing, poofing, and braids can cause weak hair as well. This is because these styles cause stress to your hair shaft.

2. Improper Diet

Eating junk foods, in general, won’t give you the nourishment your scalp needs for beautiful hair. Too much sugar promotes inflammation and causes spiking in insulin and androgens. These hormones will stick to your hair follicles causing hair fall.

3. Hormonal Imbalance

Hypothyroidism (overactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (underactive), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can cause weak hair. Some women with these conditions will experience male-pattern baldness on their scalps.

Signs of Weak Hair

1. Tangled Hair

If you comb your hair down and the comb doesn’t smoothly go through, you might have weak hair even if it’s thick.

2. Thin Hair

A thin hair is an obvious sign that your scalp lacks proper nutrition. Also, don’t confuse soft hair with thin hair. One way to know if you have thin hair is to check if your scalp is easily visible from above.

3. Frizzy Hair

When you use heat-styling products too often, your hair ends up frizzy. Heat strips your hair of its natural moisture.

4 Tips to Strengthen and Prevent Weak Hair

1. Take supplements and eat more protein

Hair is made up of a protective protein called keratin. We need a lot of vitamin A, zinc, iron, vitamin C, biotin, vitamin D, and vitamin E for keratin synthesis. By eating a lot of protein with vitamin supplements, your body will boost keratin production. This will lead to thicker and stronger hair. Not only that, but your skin and nails will also be healthier.

2. Look for deep conditioning treatments

Deep conditioners last longer in your hair than ordinary conditioners. This is because they contain natural ingredients like coconut oil and aloe vera. Cetrimonium Bromide and Behentrimonium Chloride are also strong yet safe chemicals that make sure moisture penetrates and gets locked in your hair strands.

Here are a few deep conditioners you should try:

3. Undergo keratin treatment

As stated before, our hair is made up of a protein called Keratin. When your hair is exposed due to heat, chemicals, and hard weather, the keratin is burned, corroded, or chunked off on a microscopic level. That’s why it becomes weak, thin, dry, rough, and etc.

With keratin treatment, the lost protein is replaced. Although this kind of keratin is synthetic and pricey, it still does the magic of repairing your hair and can last up to 6 months.

4. Don’t brush your hair too often

Brushing or combing your hair when you don’t need to will cause a lot of friction in the strands. It will cause the keratin to be fined like sandpaper to a concrete wall. As much as possible, only brush your hair when going to sleep or after bathing where your hair is dry. Wear a ponytail so it won’t be messed up when doing some activities or by the wind.

At the first sign of your hair weakening, immediately stop all your styling routines and activities. Treat your hair with a deep conditioner or a keratin treatment. Visit the salon if you have to for professional services.
