What Can Prevent You From Landing a Spot on a Pro Cheer Team?

Previously, we’ve talked about how you can recover from a failed audition.

In relation to the topic, I have a question for you: Do you know the problems that can cause a pro cheer/dance audition failure? I ask this because I believe that if you know what can make you fail, you can prepare for it and avoid falling back into the same hole (if you auditioned many times already in the past)!

While failure is inevitable, every audition candidate wants to make the team on the first try. That’s completely understandable! So without further ado, here’s a list of common reasons that can prevent you from landing a spot on your dream team.

1. Lack of planning

Having an audition plan will guide your actions in the right direction. You need to carefully think about the things you should prepare for to succeed in the auditions. The first time I auditioned for an NFL team, my mistake was that I didn’t plan ahead. When I saw returning veteran cheerleaders, I thought to myself, “Uh oh… I am definitely NOT in my element right now.”

2. Overconfidence

Confidence is essential for success. It comes from being prepared and knowledgeable! But overconfidence is different. It’s counterproductive. It’s excessively believing in your abilities to the point of ignoring the facts - think of a student who doesn’t study at all for an exam and believes that she’ll get a perfect score!

3. Being closed-minded

Why is it that some people make the same mistakes repeatedly, while others keep making progress? The answer lies in their mindset. It’s either closed or open. It’s important to welcome valuable feedback. Being open to honest feedback allows you to gain insights so you can realize what you did wrong and can improve on.

4. Auditioning for just one team

Are you that willing to land a spot on any pro cheer team this year? If your answer is yes, then do not limit yourself to a single team. Consider auditioning for multiple teams that have different audition schedules. That way, you can plan your travel. Do some research and see what teams are available. Don’t just aim for the NFL or NBA, but also take a look at teams in pro hockey or soccer.

5. Expecting results overnight

Some things take time. For example, learning better dance technique or getting fitter. If you’re hoping to change, you have to invest enough time and energy in it. Knowing this, make sure that you prepare in advance. You wouldn’t want to practice something three days before the auditions!
