7 Ways to Stick to Your Workout (and Get Results)

How many times have you promised yourself to hit the gym or get up early for an AM jog and failed miserably? Missing out is something that happens to anyone… even to a highly motivated and passionate person like yourself. Sometimes you tell yourself stories that do not serve you… or you allow problems to get the best of you.

Whatever the reasons, know that there are solutions to stick to a workout plan. The next time you feel tempted to stay in, sleep, or laze away, check out these 7 tips.

Sticking to your workout doesn’t have to be hard. Read my tips:

1. Identify workouts that you enjoy doing.

Enjoyment is such an important tool for achieving your goals. It’s hard to get something done or do something with all your best effort if you hate it in the first place. Don’t like huge gym equipment? Learn free weight alternatives. Experiment with a variety of techniques.

2. Hire a personal trainer.

In a previous post, I mentioned that getting a personal trainer helps you exercise safely. But a personal trainer does more than that: He or she will push you to keep going and hold you accountable. If you can’t get a trainer, join group workouts!

3. Connect with like-minded people.

Do you know that the company you surround yourself with will either help you or sabotage your goals? If you want to get fitter and love your body, join a community of people with the same aspirations. Be inspired by their stories of failure and success, and realize that you’re not alone. We have a Facebook group here at Pro Cheer Life - feel free to join anytime!

4. Journal your daily accomplishments.

Are you writing down your workouts? A lot of women don’t keep a workout journal thinking that it has no real purpose. Whether you’re a gym rat or an enthusiast of home-based workouts, journaling helps you stay on track and alert you of areas that need improvement.

5. Learn to embrace discomfort.

We like an easy and comfortable journey because it makes us feel good. However, real growth happens when you go beyond your comfort zone. Observe what current professional cheerleaders do. Challenge yourself to be like them, workout like them. Once you realize the transformation that comes by pushing through discomfort, you find it hard to stop. You yearn for more.

6.  Visualize success.

Whenever you don’t feel like doing the work, close your eyes and paint an image of you making the team. Now think about the steps you need to take to get there. There is power in visualization, as it helps you rehearse great outcomes before they happen. Visualization is an opportunity to focus on the positive and be motivated to create positive results.

7. Get expert advice.

Learn from someone who’s been there, done that. Former professional cheerleaders (like myself) are the best people to approach if you want to know what it takes to succeed. Read professional cheerleader blogs and books. Sign-up for prep classes as they include Q&A sessions with veteran pro cheerleaders.

If you think it’s hard to stay consistent in fitness, imagine the real hardship of not making the team because you didn’t do the work! Be sure to follow these tips. Need more fitness and motivation strategies? Check these out:
