No Dance Classes In Your Area? Here's What You Can Do

Lockdown restrictions may have been lifted in most parts of the US but social distancing regulations are still encouraged. That means gatherings such as dance classes may still be on hiatus.

If your locality used to have a dance studio but it isn’t in business right now, you can use these tips to learn a dance style or two for your pro cheer prep.

1. Define the dance type you’re interested in

Before taking dance classes, find out what type of dance style you want to learn first. Current pro cheerleaders in NBA squads are usually interested in freestyle dancing while the current NFL cheerleaders are more inclined to learn more about Arena dancing styles and Hip Hop.

If you’re an aspiring pro cheerleader, decide on one or two dance styles you’re going to showcase at the auditions and stick to them until the big day. Each dance style differs in methods of learning and practice. Jumping from one style to another will make you go back to zero which would waste precious audition preparation time.

2. Research for online resources and do background research

When you have chosen a dance style, learn more about its history by searching for it on Google. Learning about a dancing style’s history such as its origins, culture, and influence in the modern world is the first step to making your body feel comfortable about its movements and feeling.

After you’ve done your research, study the dance’s basic movements and techniques. Start practicing the movement sets one by one. Take your practice sessions further by learning intermediate to advanced techniques by watching tutorials on Youtube. If you cannot find a resource on Youtube, there are a lot of dance pages on Facebook you can follow.

3. Attend online classes

Channel owners of the Youtube dance tutorials sometimes put their contact information, online class details, and links for you to use and join. Be sure to always check the description box after you have watched the tutorial video especially if you liked their content. The same goes for the dancing-related Facebook posts and pages.

A lot of websites also offer online dance classes. A few examples you can choose from are STEEZY (Modern), Operation: Tap (Tap Dancing), Veyette (Virtual Ballet School), CLI Studios (Mix), LEARNTODANCE.COM (Multiple Dance Styles and Video Courses), and Dance Plug (Multiple Dance Styles with Learning Levels).

4. Hire an online mentor

Hiring an online mentor is better than taking an online dance class because your mentor will be with you throughout your entire journey of being good at your chosen dance style. Unlike online dance classes where they follow a schedule and deadline, online mentors let you learn at your own pace while providing guidance and support.

They are also keen on finding your errors while thoroughly teaching you the proper techniques to every mistake. Find your online mentor in The Whole Dancer, TakeLessons, and My Dance Mentor.

5. Commute to take live classes

Try to search for in-person dance classes outside your town or city on Google. Visit neighboring counties and pay attention to posters and flyers about dance studios. If online classes aren’t your schtick, you can opt to drive a few miles away from your home to attend a live class.

6. Invite your friends

If you have learned a few techniques and routines from your desired dance style, share them with your like-minded friends. Learning to dance with a group is also good because you get to exchange insights about how to perform certain moves.

Eventually, you’ll notice that you have already become the mentor.

Don’t rely on in-person classes to learn dancing. If you wait for dance studios to reopen in your area, you might not have enough time to learn a single dance style when you need to showcase it such as pro cheer squad auditions or live arena performances. Be resourceful. There are a lot of sources on the internet waiting for you to be discovered. All it takes is a few presses and clicks.
