7 Life Hacks for Dancers

Pro cheerleading is one of the most versatile and difficult careers in the world. You have to be a dietician, beautician, social skill mentor, fitness instructor, and dance instructor to yourself all at once.

But that doesn’t mean that everything involving the career should be hard and expensive. Take dancing for example. You need to make sure your foot landing is soft to avoid putting stress on your joints. What if the floor doesn’t provide a cushion? What would you do?

Normally you’d buy cushioning shoes which is another addition to your expenses. You don’t need to do that. You can just wear dancing socks as a hack. There are more dancing life hacks you can use. Just keep on reading.

1. Sip water through a straw

You’ll need a lot of water to stay alive and focused on audition dances and live arena performances. But drinking directly from a glass or tumbler has the risk of spilling on your face and clothes ruining your makeup and attire.

Drinking from a glass also ruins your lipstick. If possible, keep a reusable straw in your bag or use a tumbler with a built-in straw for drinking water.

2. Wear old socks outside your shoes on floors that aren’t for dancing

Wooden and laminate floors aren’t often cushioned for dancing. This could cause stress on a dancer’s knees and joints. Sometimes the floors and rubber shoes have too much friction to make sliding possible for dances like the tango.

Wearing old winter socks outside your shoes will help with this. Winter socks are thick enough which helps absorb the impact from landing and the fabric allows you to slide properly on smooth surfaces. Just wear the old socks over your toes for sliding and cushion and don’t cover your heels for stopping friction.

3. Insert “ss” before the “youtube” in the video URL

Can’t download that perfect dancing video on youtube? Just put “ss” on the video’s URL. For example, turn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F7AZYyCYKw&ab_channel=BrinnNicole into https://www.ssyoutube.com/watch?v=_F7AZYyCYKw&ab_channel=BrinnNicole.

Select the video file type you want and the clarity of the video then click download. Now you have a dancing video you can use for audition preparation practice. However, there are some songs protected by copyright that you can’t download or can download but without audio.

4. Hairspray your hairpins

On live performance or audition day, spray your hairpins before sticking them to your hair. The spray acts as an extra adhesive that helps the pin put your hair in place as you dance.

5. Make sponge ice packs for your injuries

Be prepared for dancing injuries incurred from practicing by soaking a sponge in water. Put the sponge inside a zip-lock bag. Then put the bag with the sponge inside the freezer. It’s a cheap and simple ice pack that works as efficiently as the commercial one. The best part of it? There’s no spilling because the sponge reabsorbs the water as it melts. To make the frozen state of the sponge last, mix salt with the water for absorption.

6. Use coconut oil to remove makeup

When the live performance or audition day concludes, apply coconut oil all over your face to soften the sticky makeup. Massage the oil to remove the cosmetics. Rinse after. Coconut oil is the best makeup remover tool because it leaves your face moisturized. If you don’t have coconut oil, you can also use petroleum jelly.

7. Bring power strips to dancing events

If you want to do your hair in the preparation room on the date of the audition or live performance, it’s best that you bring power strips to avoid an electrical outlet battle-royale. Not only will you give yourself the means to plug all your hair-styling tools and phone charger, but you can also gain the favor of other candidates and squad members by helping them in their electronic-dilemma.

Nothing can go wrong in an audition or live performance day if the aspiring or current pro cheerleader is well-prepared. Invest in a large and hard-cased gym bag so you can carry and transport everything you need to important pro cheer events. Be sure to ready all your stuff the night before the big day. Practice all your moves thoroughly and give your all when you dance!
